As medical workers continue to care for Coronavirus patients around the globe, uncertainties still surround many aspects of the illness. Information about rates of contagiousness and how best to care for patients is being updated and changing by the day, leaving many healthcare workers grappling for how they can best look after patients and keep themselves and co-workers safe at the same rate.
As a provider of realistic learning systems for healthcare education, we sought to provide specific training on COVID-19 to help medical professionals quickly recognize the signs and symptoms of the illness and determine care and escalation plans. In collaboration with the UK's National Health Service and Health Education England, we created HoloPatient: COVID-19, which is available free worldwide for Microsoft HoloLens 2 users.
Introducing HoloPatient: COVID-19
The new app prepares healthcare workers and students to identify and treat COVID-19. The app uses high quality photo-realistic holographic video of patients to guide learners through the four stages of the illness. The simulations help healthcare providers recognize the virus's common symptoms, model the assessment and risk stratification of patients with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, and understand the signs indicating deterioration and need for escalation of care.
HoloPatient: COVID-19 doesn’t require any previous HoloLens experience to use. Features include:
- Real-life patient holographic simulations depicting a variety of symptoms
- Full hand-tracking range enabling users to move, reposition, and interact with holographic patients
- Vitals Panel and Patient Information displays showing patient monitoring data
- Voiceover guidance, voice-command operations, and pause/repeat functionality
- Tools and tips to make the app easy for learners to use
Dynamic Results in Healthcare Education
Although the app has just been released, it has already been applied to teaching institutions. Southern Institute of Technology credits HoloPatient: COVID-19 for incorporating the latest international understandings of the disease and showing learners how to handle evolving clinical situations.
"(HoloPatient: COVID-19) is the perfect platform to assist students in developing and refining their clinical assessment skills in a safe, controlled, and supported learning environment."

Our flagship applications, including HoloPatient and HoloHuman, provide medical training through immersive holographic experiences designed to drive enhanced learning outcomes. HoloPatient allows learners to see, hear, and assess holographic patient pathologies to practice a range of diagnoses, developing essential clinical assessment skills. HoloHuman is the world's first 3D anatomy model created for immersive exploration, giving learners the ability to interpret depth and relative position of anatomical features in a vivid learning experience.
We are proud to offer the HoloPatient: COVID-19 app free to help save more lives around the globe. The app provides healthcare providers a way to learn to recognize the signs and symptoms of this disease in a risk-free environment.
